A year ago, their free version announced it was installing a security update (v1.0.4.1) "on top of a fast and easy to use browser, Opera".

Yes, the same Opera browser that is now owned by Quihoo 360, a Chinese consortium, since 2016.

Checking the Avira forums, people are screaming blue murder about Opera (a) being installed without their consent, and becoming their default browser, and (b) being difficult if not impossible to uninstall. Avira's response has either been sarcastic dismissals of people's concerns, or simply deleting their complaints.

Uninstalled, and no longer recommended.
